The Dward Cavendish grows 8-10 feet in height. It takes 12-18 months to reach maturity and begin bearing fruit. Typically, this is the type of banana found in grocery stores. Banana stalks only produce fruit once but will produce pups to replace the parent plant.
Planting
Plant in spring or summer in full sun, in a location providing some wind protection. Banana plants require moist fertile soil with regular watering - about 1 inch per week during its growing season (spring through fall).
Caring
Fertilize 4-6 times a year. Give young plants ½ pound of 6-2-12 fertilizer every two months for best results.
Harvesting
After banana harvest, cut your tree back to about 30 inches and let the stem dry out for two weeks before removing it.
