Turmeric

Turmeric is a root vegetable - spice known for adding color, flavor and nutrition to foods. It has tropical foliage and flowers and is in the ginger family. Turmeric grows to three feet tall with large leaves.

Planting

Full Sun to partial share - will benefit from some afternoon shade when over 90 degrees.
Plant tubers in early Spring.

Caring

Add compost, and a few applications of balanced fertilizer throughout the season.

Harvesting

Harvest in late fall or early winter – once the plant goes dormant - the leaves will start to turn yellow-brown and dry.  Rinse to remove the dirt. Cut the rhizome away from the stalk. Allow to thoroughly air dry. Save some rhizomes for future growth.

Peel it, then slice, dice, or grate it to use.

1” of fresh turmeric rhizome = 1 tablespoon of freshly grated or 1 teaspoon of ground turmeric.
